Roulette is one of the easiest live casino games to follow. The dealer spins a ball around a numbered wheel, and you bet on where it will land. There is no hand to play and no cards to count, so your only decision is which bets to place. This guide explains the wheel, the main bet types and how a round runs.

The wheel has numbered pockets, each coloured red or black, plus a green zero. Many live tables use a European wheel with numbers 1 to 36 and a single 0. Some tables use an American wheel, which has an extra 00. The wheel type is shown on the table, so check it before you play.
In every round, the dealer launches the ball and it settles into one pocket. That pocket is the winning number, and every bet is settled against it.
Roulette bets fall into two groups. Inside bets are placed on specific numbers. Outside bets cover larger groups of numbers. The table below uses a European wheel with a single zero.
| Bet | What you pick | Numbers covered |
|---|---|---|
| Straight up | One number | 1 |
| Split | Two neighbouring numbers | 2 |
| Street | A row of three numbers | 3 |
| Corner | Four numbers that meet at a point | 4 |
| Line | Two neighbouring rows | 6 |
| Dozen | 1 to 12, 13 to 24 or 25 to 36 | 12 |
| Column | One of the three vertical columns | 12 |
| Red or Black | The colour of the number | 18 |
| Odd or Even | The type of number | 18 |
| Low or High | 1 to 18 or 19 to 36 | 18 |
The pattern is simple. The more numbers a bet covers, the more often it wins, but the less it pays. A straight up bet wins rarely and pays the most. Red or Black wins often and pays less. Payouts follow the paytable shown at the table, so read it before you bet.
The zero is not red or black, and it is not odd or even. When the ball lands on 0, outside bets such as Red, Black, Odd, Even, Low and High lose at most tables. This is why those bets win slightly less than half the time, even though they cover 18 numbers. Some tables have special rules for the zero, so check the table rules if you are not sure.
The ball lands on 17, which is black and odd. A straight up bet on 17 wins. A Black bet wins, and a Red bet loses. An Odd bet wins, and an Even bet loses. A Low bet (1 to 18) wins, and a High bet (19 to 36) loses. A bet on the second dozen (13 to 24) wins, and a bet on the first dozen (1 to 12) loses.
Most live roulette tables show a panel with the latest winning numbers, and sometimes counts of red, black or "hot" and "cold" numbers. It is useful for following what has happened at the table.
Keep in mind that every spin is separate. The wheel and the ball have no memory, so earlier numbers do not decide the next one. Treat the panel as a record of past rounds, not as a prediction tool.

At most tables, they lose, because the zero is neither red nor black. Some tables have special rules for the zero, so check the table rules.
A single zero wheel has numbers 1 to 36 and one 0. A double zero wheel has an extra 00 pocket. The wheel type is shown on the table.
